I love toddlers because:

  • They will nod along while you are talking to them and when you ask they say they understood, but they really had no idea what you are talking about.
  • You will talk while they look at you blankly or ignore you, but they heard every word and can repeat it back to you later!
  • Full diapers make them walk like John Wayne.
  • Getting the giggles is a common occurrence.
  • You never know what the next thing to come out of their mouth will be. Belabela = peanut butter, asses = glasses, Blow bubbles = lovable, wheels on the bus go wound & wound
  • They put so much energy into hugging and kissing they grunt with the effort.
  • They never, ever get bored of pointing out airplanes, trucks, dogs, cars, leaves, anything they find interesting, even if it's the 100th one that day
  • The same kid who is digging in the dirt will later come up to you, hands outstretched, horrified that they got dirty
  • Wearing mommy's shoes & being able to walk around in them is a badge of pride
  • "Wight, I'm a big giwl?" Wight!
  • Choosing nursing over a cookie, or with a cookie, or in between bites of a cookie, or while covered in cookie crumbs.
  • All it takes is a little song to get them in the mood to do something they didn't want to do a second ago.
  • Mommy is still a superhero!

  1. I read the neat results of a study on how the toddler brain works. Apparently, they do hear us, but they need to experience things for themselves before they can follow through.

The study gave the example of telling a toddler to grab a coat before going out in the cold. We think they'll go get it because they anticipate the cold, but apparently, the toddler brain can't do that.

Instead, once they get out in the cold, their brain pulls up the recollection of what mom said and THEN they go get it.

I found that very interesting and useful for those times you want to scream because they didn't listen. :-)

  2. Oh yeah! I think I remember reading that. It's very easy to be psychological about it outside the situation, but when you need to go and they won't put their shoes on, or get their shoes, and then do finally go to get their shoes, they come back with a stuffed dog . . .

  3. I love this posting. I'm linking it to a couple of my blogs. (http://9moons.blogspot.com and a private one for my family)
BTW thanks for the great advice on slings. I will probably follow it... does Shilav carry the slings you mentioned?

  4. The only carriers I saw at shilav (this is already more than 6mos ago) were structured slings w/ clips and wraps. Unfortunately I borrowed mine so I can't be too helpful on the where! A friend of mine made her own Mei tei and there is a lady in shiloh who weaves & makes slings. I'm sure if you post on Janglo someone will have a lead for you!
